Sea Cliff Residence | On The Boards

Sea Cliff is one of San Francisco’s most distinctive neighborhoods, perched on cliffs that offer sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Marin. Established in 1913 as one of the city’s early residence parks, the area is defined by wide lots, detached homes, and lush landscaping—a rare combination in San Francisco’s urban landscape. Its architectural history, steep terrain, and exposure to the elements make each project here both technically challenging and uniquely rewarding.

FORMA Construction, in collaboration with Butler Armsden Architects, is leading a complete renovation of a 1928 residence in this remarkable setting. The project preserves the house’s historic character while adapting it for modern living—creating a legacy that spans generations.

Much of the structure is being retained, but the home has been carefully stripped down to the studs. Temporary shoring and new concrete footings have reinforced the original framework, while new steel columns are now in place to support the next phase of construction. Threading modern structure through an existing historic frame requires precision, coordination, and deep respect for the craft.

Arriving at the property, you’re met with lush greenery and the sound of the ocean. Behind a manicured garden lies a home filled with history and transformation, a traditional waterfront residence being carefully reimagined for contemporary family life.

To build in Sea Cliff means working with the land, not just on top of it. Here, every detail—structural, architectural, and material—honors the balance between preservation and progress.
