Jordan Park Residence
A Home Full of History
When it came time for Interior Designer Katie Spalding to renovate her own home, it started out small. Katie’s husband, Patrick, had grown up in this house. His dad, who lived in several houses in San Francisco throughout the years, would always describe it as his favorite; “It has the best energy,” he would say. When Katie and Patrick decided to raise their family here, they knew it needed updating, but they wanted to keep the original charm and beautiful classic proportions that were so quintessentially part of this San Francisco Victorian remodel. Katie immediately called Architect Chambers + Chambers, who had done an initial home remodel several years prior, and the project was on its way.
What began as a modest renovation soon evolved into a comprehensive overhaul, stripping the house down to its core. The central stairway was strategically relocated, offering a direct view of the backyard upon entering. A significant change was the relocation of the primary suite to the rear of the house, enhancing privacy and space.
Designing a Family-Friendly Home
During the process, Katie and Patrick had their third child, so they were confident designing the kid’s rooms and knowing who was going where. Above all else, they knew they would be moving into a house with three young children, and the design would need to support that. They did not want a design that felt “precious” but one where you could feel comfortable with chaos while still looking beautiful. There are multiple places to eat or do arts and crafts, almost all fabrics are performance, and one of their favorite additions was the overhaul of the backyard. The yard now features a pergola with hidden monkey bars, a sunken trampoline, and a beautiful hot tub. A downstairs playroom also helps keep mess to a minimum.
FORMA Construction takes great pride in this successful collaboration, which has resulted in a beautifully sophisticated family home. The house retains its traditional charm while incorporating modern design elements, a testament to the expertise and teamwork of all involved in this San Francisco Victorian remodel.
